If successful, the California Craft Cannabis Initiative could lead to better quality cannabis in California and beyond. Drafted by lawyers Heather Burke and Omar Figueroa, the initiative is one of a large handful of recreational marijuana legalization measures vying to make it onto the November 2016 statewide ballot. In addition to retroactively legalizing the use, cultivation, possession, transportation, processing, distribution, and sale of marijuana by persons 21 years of age and older, the initiative would establish a seed bank dedicated to the preservation and development of cannabis strains, and would also provide incentives to encourage small-scale growers to produce top-quality weed. We've all heard of craft beers, but have you ever heard of craft cannabis? The concept is the same whether we're talking beer or buds. Small-scale, focused production allows artisans the opportunity to create unique, unusual, or specialty products of often exceptional quality. If California's Craft Cannabis Initiative passes, craft cannabis growers could actually register and trademark their buds. For instance, their would likely be regional designations such as “Humboldt County” or “Emerald Triangle,” as well as certified strains.

What this would mean for the average California cannabis consumer is that what you pay for is what you get, at least when purchasing a certified or trademark-registered product. Seems like a simple enough consumer expectation, but this isn't always the case in legal recreational cannabis states like Colorado, Oregon, and Washington where strains are often misnamed, ill grown, and poorly preserved in the mass-production frenzy of trying to meet an ever-rising demand. No means for certifying any particular strains of marijuana exist in these states, which basically results in anyone being able to call their buds anything they like and sell them under any name they choose, and consumers having nothing other than their own eyes, nose, and knowledge of cannabis to help them tell the difference. That Lemon Haze might be Lemon Haze, or it might not. That “rare” strain whose name you've never heard of before could be good old Blue Dream with a fancy new alias. If the initiative in California passes and other states decide to adopt their own certification mechanisms, consumers would be able to tell exactly what they were getting, and growers would have an incentive to protect their strains and develop them to their fullest potential.

The California Craft Cannabis Initiative would also provide an opportunity for growers to have their crops certified organic. This is something none of the legal marijuana states currently offer, which again leaves the consumer with little but their own judgment and the shopkeeper's word to go on when hoping to purchase organically-grown cannabis. As it stands, much of the marijuana sold at dispensaries is coated with pesticides and often contains fungus or heavy metals. It might say “organic,” but there isn't really any way of knowing whether or not it actually is. The California Craft Cannabis Initiative would make it possible for consumers to choose products that are certified organic, which could encourage other legal weed states to follow suit.

The initiative also calls for the establishment of the California Cannabis Genetic Repository. The repository would collect germplasm from all known cannabis strains, carefully preserving and documenting the biodiversity of the cannabis genus. Researchers and others wishing to study the cannabis plant would have free access to the repository, which could lead to the development of strains with higher potency, new hybrids, and more. As the nation's herb supply continues to be flooded with mislabeled or wrongly identified strains, preserving the genetics of specific cannabis strains becomes increasingly important not just for California, but for the world. The sponsors of the California Craft Cannabis Initiative have until December 21st to collect the 365,880 signatures required to get the measure placed on next November's ballot. There are at least ten other recreational cannabis legalization initiatives that are in the process of meeting requirements to make it on the ballot, as well. Should I Try Marijuana Concentrates?

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 31 October 2016 in Canna Blog

Is It Time for Concentrates?

Concentrates are a far more prevalent product in the current marijuana industry than they ever have been, but for new customers and tourists the idea can be a little daunting and much of the time not something that they are actually looking for. I have seen tourists drop hundreds of dollars on concentrates and the necessary apparatuses to consume them, just for a few days worth of their trip, when really they could have gotten more than enough regular marijuana to meet whatever chemical demands their body may have had.

While concentrates are understandably a more purified form of what we are all smoking anyway, they can bring with them some disconcerting effects. There is of course the stigma that if you’ve not done concentrates before, your first time dabbing can be a little ridiculous compared to smoking regular flower. The first time I dabbed was right when I first moved to Denver, and I was blisteringly high for almost three hours. But the first thing I noticed was after having dabbed, regular flower did not hit me the same way for a few days. Concentrates can wreak havoc on your tolerance, and if you get too used to doing concentrates you can find yourself not even getting anywhere smoking regular weed. This is one of the main reasons I don’t do concentrates, because I enjoy actual smoking too much to let it get ruined by that level of tolerance. Even things like disposable vape pens can do a number on your resistance to THC, though generally only the higher end pure hash cartridges, as some of the ones cut with polyethylene glycol come in only slightly above smoking normally.

But for some people, particularly those who genuinely use it for medical benefits and need an incredibly strong high as fast as they can get it, and after building up a tolerance to regular marijuana it can be the next step for people not interested in edibles or tinctures. It can be pretty depressing for medical patients to find that their tolerance has risen to the point that an intake method doesn’t work anymore, and having this next step option is a nice trade off, though it can get considerably more expensive if you do it very regularly. That being said, because of the new regulation on concentrates only allowed to be sold as attributing to 3.5 grams of your allowed buying quantity, many dispensaries are running sales on concentrates, since they used to be able to sell considerably more at a time under previous regulations.

Some new products have cropped up as well, making ultra purified concentrates that then have additional terpenes added back in for an even more enhanced effect. These are very clean compared to regular flower as with smoking weed or tobacco there is a good amount of plant matter you are dealing with in the process of trying to get your chemicals. Terpenes can sometimes get lost or lessened in the case of some concentrate production, which can take away from the complexity of the high, but these days extractors have gotten much more skilled than when this all was starting. For people with greater levels of health concerns as far as what they put into their body can find concentrates to be the thing they might be looking for, though intake methods can have a decent presence in this decision as well.

This also comes into play when selling to people in a dispensary, as sometimes the people that want concentrates are only going to be in town for a few days and aren’t going to want to spend a whole bunch on a reliable setup, making for a growth in the available vaporizer pens, varying in price and reliability from 13$ disposable pens to several hundred dollar gold plated options. I have used a few of the disposables and had a roughly $60 pen that worked fairly well, but it is definitely a learning process as far as how much each pen can functionally use and timing for good hits.

Ultimately concentrates are for those with an already established tolerance, or an option every once in a while to have slightly too good of a time. They are definitely a big choice to make if you plan on switching to them regularly, though the industry is constantly working to make them more accessible so who knows maybe that’ll be the only way we smoke in a year or two. Just be wary, they can often be more than anyone regularly needs.

The Effects of Different Marijuana Strains | Enhance - Debilitate - Normalize,

When I first started budtending, I was very much of the "if it messes you up it's what you want" persuasion. I still very much dwell in that area but as I have had the opportunity to try a ludicrous amount of different strains and crosses, I can much more accurately get to the effect I'm looking for in most cases. Some strains I know for sure will effect me in a specific way, whereas some strains still baffle me and I need to do more pretend research on, all strains just making me wish I could test individual cannabinoids by themselves, But after all of this, I needed a way to explain the generalized effect of strains beyond the Indica Sativa Hybrid model, as there are plenty of cases where just those labels alone were either not accurate enough or in some cases even opposite. We recently got a Sativa strain that is under no circumstances effectually useful as a Sativa, and I would never sell it as such. A lot of categorization happens based on the physical makeup of the plants that are grown, as you can't necessarily know what a plant is really going to result in outside of how it has ended up in previous batches.

Indica vs. Sativa

The use of Indica Sativa and Hybrid in a consumer context is also essentially a curse. I cannot even begin to count the number of people that have come in not even ever having smoked weed adamantly telling me that they don't want Indicas, they hate them and they only want Sativas because someone told them all Indica strains would put them to sleep. This is understandable as these past two years have really opened up a lot as far as open experimentation and research, which can only continue to climb. But even so, the average customer is probably still going to tell you that they don't want Indicas, or that Sativas make them too paranoid or sometimes even that Sativas put them to sleep and they can ONLY smoke hybrids, which is generally all nonsense.

Even just going by my dispensary alone, we have always had Indica strains that are very energetic in addition to the more downer strains, and plenty of Sativas that I would never recommend for people to go out and do stuff on, more prone to relaxation and calmness. I have had a hard time really trying to narrow down how to describe the effects of different strains in a way that I can keep them all straight in my head and avoid being constantly thrown off by new weird crosses. So after much deliberation, I came up with the following three categories: enhance, debilitate, and normalize.

Three Ways to Categorize The Effects of Smoking Marijuana

Enhance strains are generally more applicable to Sativas and Sativa leaning hybrids, but are not limited to that by any means. Any strain that modifies your mental or physical feelings in a way that pushes you forward or helps you focus or even body high that reduces muscle pain could fall under this category, Enhance strains can come in many different ranges of strength as well, some lower THC strains being very beneficial for cerebral effect. These strains are generally more recommended for going out and doing things, mental expansion and creativity channeling, among other positive effects. The body high side of enhance strains I have also found to be a little more like lifting body high, losing a few pounds of weight in your extremities, good for all kinds of outdoor kinds of adventures. Enhance strains can also carry with them a heavy drop effect once they have worn off, as enhancement can't be permanent and you must eventually go back to normal you.

Debilitate strains come in two main types for me, strains that are very heavy on the body high and knockdown potential, and strains that make you stupid. I am a huge fan of strains that make you stupid, me stupid, what have you. I avoid a lot of enhance strains as I feel like there is rarely as much change in my headspace, sometimes getting a little more tangential than usual but that is rarely something I'm looking for, as anything more going on in my head just pushes me more towards just getting too distracted to function, whereas strains that knock me down mentally make me more able to enjoy the present rather than spiraling through my thoughts. Intense heavy body high as opposed to the enhance strains lifting body is also a preference for me, again because I want to be knocked down. While these strains can be often attributed to Indicas, the dumbing strains I have found are generally closer to hybrids, usually resulting from an interesting strain cross.

Normalize strains are interesting because they vary from person to person, as you may find that an Enhance or a Debilitate strain may actually knock you down or pick you up to normal. Most CBD strains that I have tried fall into this category, as they are generally just relaxing and relief heavy, without actually being too down. Some people associate CBDs with going to sleep or tiredness, but I don't really agree in any context. Normalize strains are more along the lines of getting you to a nice average space that you want to inhabit, rather than pushing you too much in any direction, similar to how people will take antidepressants or Adderall, things like that.

But these three categories are fairly fluid, really only getting assigned to strains that I think fully embody these ideas. Still if you go into a store and ask for something that fits one of these contexts, I guarantee you will have a much more productive conversation with your budtender. They may even be able to find you something much closer to what you need rather than just assigning you the Indica or Sativa of the day because you told them you couldn't smoke one or the other. I recommend you always take your drug research seriously, and try to move away from the traditional genetic classifications of weed. The sooner we start to move away from these ideas the sooner we can really advance into growing strains that do the same thing every time.

Save your stickers, keep a journal, whatever works for you, I encourage you to do it. Learning is the best aspect of this industry right now, as much as everyone else would have you believe it is money.

Money is not what we're working for.

Practical Tips for Combating the Side Effects of High THC Cannabis

A recent article discussed the most common side effects of high THC cannabis strains and some expert tips for how to fight them.  While these tips were helpful, they just seemed to be missing something, practical experience.  Here are a few tried and true tips to fight off these bothersome little buddies of pot smokers everywhere.

Start Slow

The experts will tell you to start with a low dose.  This a great game plan for more than one reason.  First, it is a slower and more controlled way to get high.  Second, it can save a ton of weed and money.  The marijuana available today is if such high quality that it only takes a puff or two of some strains to leave veterans like Snoop Dogg drooling for hours.  Save some money and stay just high enough, by going slow and adjusting as needed.

Edibles are all Different for Everyone

We have all heard about the nightmare experiences that edibles have caused and when we first got to Colorado, my husband and I were both more than a little leery of trying edibles for the first time.  Neither of us are noobs and have had more than one or two pot brownies in the past, but the stories we heard didn’t set very well.  When we finally tried some, it was not at all what we were expecting.

The first ones we tried came as pills and highly recommended by a budtender who said she used them regularly (and looked very nicely baked).  Although the effects were mildly noticeable after eating several, it was most definitely not what we were expecting after all the warnings.  The second edibles we tried were Americana gummies.  They tasted pretty decent, and oddly enough, made our mouths a little numb as we chewed them.  Even with that immediate effect, it still took at least an hour to feel the full effects, and then it was still only a “one-beer-buzz” feeling after eating 4 each.  Most definitely not any sort of scary or bad trip.  Of course, everyone’s experience is different, just be prepared and don’t plan on operating any dangerous equipment or cooking a soufflé when trying edibles for the first time.   Also look for a dispensary running a deal on edibles because they do tend to cost a good bit more than a regular bag of treats.

Anxiety and Paranoia

The very best tip for this is to be comfortable before you get high.  Being in a situation where you fear getting caught will always intensify feelings of guilt, paranoia and anxiety.  Remember how anxious you got smoking in Mom’s house?  Or how about the paranoia in the school bathroom – knowing you would get expelled if you got caught?  What’s the very best way to combat anxiety and paranoia when smoking cannabis?  Move to a state where it’s legal. I did, and my anxiety and paranoia instantly went down 85 percent.  For most this is not an option, but here are a few tips to try:

  • Use cover scent like incense, automatic air fresheners, or ionizing air cleaners.  Hiding or eliminating the pungent aroma of good pot from intruding neighbors and unexpected visitors will ease fears immensely.
  • Don’t smoke in the main living area during visitor hours.  Save the kicked back TV time for after the kids are in bed.  In most places, the police can’t even visit without reason after 10pm, making the living room a safe and cozy place to enjoy your right to pursue happiness.
  • Don’t be high around people or situations that make you feel guilty.  Some smokers don’t feel comfortable being high around their kids or family, while others have no problem going to the PTA meeting baked.  If your personal morals or ethics make it feel wrong to be high – then don’t be.  Don’t cave into peer pressure, just save the bowl for when you get home and enjoy it instead of getting freaked out because you find yourself too high at church.

Cottonmouth and Dry Eyes

These side effects are said to be best combated by drinking plenty of water.  Hydration it seems, is the key to everything, including reducing two of the most annoying side effects of smoking cannabis.  In addition to staying well hydrated, be sure to keep a drink nearby when you sit down for smoking sessions.  No matter how well hydrated you may be, some strains of marijuana just cause cottonmouth and that’s that.  Being well hydrated is also said to help with dry eyes.  One thing to remember not to do is rely too heavily on eye drops.  Overuse can actually end up making eyes dryer and reducing natural tear production.  Not to mention, the medicines in certain eye drops can cause diarrhea when used excessively.

The Munchies

The munchies can be a reason to smoke or a bad side effect depending on who you ask, but one thing’s for sure, they do exist and they are hard as heck to stay away from once they show up at the party.  Short of eating everything in the kitchen or inventing really strange recipes, there is one certain way to keep the munchies at bay.

Any veteran pot smoker knows that there is one sure fire way to kill a good buzz – eat.  So many long time smokers simply use will power, and their dedication to stay high, as their number one weapon in the war against the munchies.  Don’t give in and eat, and stay higher longer.  Smoke a little and eat a pizza, and an hour later you will find yourself repeating the process -  and the calories start to add up.  But smoke and wait it out, and the munchies will pass sooner or later and save 500 calories or more as well as a great buzz.

Blue Dream Strain Review, Genetics, and Origins

With so many different varieties of marijuana available, those strains that stand out and become widely known must really be something special--or at least, especially prominent. One such strain that has maintained its popularity for many years now is Blue Dream, a strain with genetics and origins that don’t seem too wildly different from other modern cannabis strains, but that has garnered thousands of rave reviews nonetheless. Part of the popularity of Blue Dream is due to the fact that this strain provides a well-balanced, all-around good high.

Blue Dream Strain Genetics

Blue Dream is a sativa-dominant hybrid that brings about 20% indica together with 80% sativa genetics. The strain results from the pairing of a sativa Haze, and Blueberry, which is an indica. Blue Dream tests at about 17-18% THC on average. If you want to grow Blue Dream, you’ll need to get a clone or a cutting, as you can’t cultivate it from seeds. Luckily, finding Blue Dream clones is no problem, as they are readily available in cities like Denver or Los Angeles, and the cost is typically very reasonable, often as low as $5 to $10 per clone.

Strain Origins - Where was Blue Dream First Grown?

If you want to know the origins and history of Blue Dream, just look west to the coast. Like so many other top weed strains, Blue Dream first emerged in the golden state of California, in the Santa Cruz area medical marijuana scene well over a decade ago. It became a big hit with medical marijuana patients who benefit from the pain-relieving, muscle-relaxing, anxiety-reducing effects of this strain.

Where to Buy Blue Dream in Denver

Blue Dream is available at many dispensaries in Denver. Some of the more popular dispensaries that have it are Medicine Man Aurora, Livwell Stapleton, and The Joint by Cannabis Dispensary.

Blue Dream Strain Review - Is it really that good?

While Blue Dream isn’t the most potent strain, it’s a very enjoyable and lasting high. The sativa qualities give you a positive, relaxed, and light feeling, while the genetic heritage of the Blueberry contributes a delicious smell and flavor that truly is very reminiscent of blueberries.  The flavor, the smell, the bluish color of the bud itself--it’s hard to beat Blue Dream for a good, enjoyable high with quality you can count on.

One thing that’s hugely different about today’s modern cannabis culture compared to what it was like a decade or two ago is the vast array of marijuana strains that are now available. With countless growing operations large and small, and so many vying to produce the latest, greatest bud, there is pretty much a constant flow of marijuana strains that keep getting better and better. The history of cannabis cultivation is changing before our eyes. Whether you’re a grower or a stoner, this is our collective marijuana heritage. Whether it’s Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies, Sour Diesel, or Bubba Kush, learning about the history, genetics and origins of different marijuana strains can give you a greater appreciation for that wonderful, wonderful herb.
