A Guide to the Different Types of Wax Dabs: What They Are and Why You Want Them

As research into cannabis accelerates, thanks to changing public sentiment and subsequent legislation, companies are not only discovering new compounds, properties, and uses for this amazing flora, but they’re also finding new and exciting ways to process it for consumption, including various types of wax dabs.

What Are Wax Dabs?

Although concentrates are thought to have been around since about the 1940s and dabs were first invented back in the ‘70s, this type of consumption remained relatively niche for decades. This was perhaps because dabs are considered difficult and potentially dangerous to produce, depending on the form of extraction used.

Today, concentrates are considered to be an ideal way to enjoy the many benefits that cannabis has to offer in an incredibly potent, cost-effective way.

Of course, there are a lot of weed concentrates to choose from, including distillates, oils, live resin, caviar, crystalline, wax, and more. There are also several different types of wax dabs.

If you’ve heard of dabbing and you’re interested in giving it a try, here’s what you need to know to make an informed decision.

What is Dabbing?

Even if you’re already familiar with other forms of cannabis consumption, such as smoking flower, ingesting tinctures, or sampling a wide range of edibles (candies, gummies, chocolates, baked goods, and even beverages), you might not have a good understanding of what dabbing entails.

It starts with several different types of wax dabs, which can range from viscous oils to sticky sugar wax to creamy budder, brittle crumble, and hard shatter.

If you know anything about cannabis plants, you know that the buds are covered with trichomes, which are tiny, crystalline structures that contain the hundreds of cannabinoids and terpenes the plant is known for.

Dabs are concentrates created by extracting compound-laden oils from the trichomes using a wide array of processes.

Common extraction methods involve the application of heat and pressure, washing in a water and ice bath, or via chemical processes involving solvents, like CO2 or butane, for example.

Butane processing — used to create butane hash oil (BHO) — is among the most popular methods and is often used to create a range of wax dabs. The resulting substances contain incredibly concentrated and potent levels of cannabinoids, like psychoactive THC and terpenes.

Whereas flower might contain about 10-20% THC, depending on the strain, dabs could have as much as 80% (sometimes more). This means that only a very small amount needs to be heated in a dabbing rig, creating vapors that are inhaled, in order to get the same effects of smoking a significantly higher volume of flower, for example.

The Benefits of Dabbing

Before you start exploring the wide world of wax dabs, you need to understand that concentrates are incredibly potent. A little goes a long way!

You should start with very small amounts until you understand the effects that dabbing will produce for you. Wax dabs deliver an intense experience you may not be prepared for, so it’s always best to start low, go slow, and work your way up to your desired effects.

When you exercise caution and choose safe, tested products, you will likely enjoy several benefits with dabbing. First and foremost, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck. Dabs may seem like they’re expensive compared to flower — especially for the small volume you receive — but because of their elevated potency, you’re sure to find that you get more for your money.

In addition, you can get the same experience as smoking a blunt from a tiny inhale of vapor. It’s much quicker and easier than smoking, and you’ll enjoy immediate and substantial effects, such as relief, relaxation, and/or euphoria, depending on the product.

If you’re worried about the potential health concerns and the social stigma of smoking, you want something more potent than edibles, you’re seeking fast, cost-effective options for relief, or all of the above, wax dabs could be a solution worth exploring.

The next step is understanding what the different types of wax dabs are and what sets them apart from one another.

Common Types of Wax Dabs

There are several forms of concentrates to choose from, but if you want to try dabbing, wax is your best option. Powdered kief or dry hash, for example, is not ideal for use with a dabbing rig, as getting it onto the tiny nail to heat it is challenging, to say the least.

Wax dabs come in a range of consistencies, from thick liquids to hard sheets. It’s always best to try different products to see which you like.

Here’s a quick rundown of the different wax dabs and what makes each one unique.

Oil Dabs

Cannabis oils may be consumed in a number of ways, depending on how they are extracted and refined. These viscous substances can be used for vaping, turned into tinctures that you can consume sublingually or simply ingest, or made into oil dabs, which are a bit thicker and not ideal for vaping.

One of the most common forms of extraction is a chemical process using butane, which produces concentrates of great potency. It also preserves terpenes, unlike some other forms of extraction.

The instrument-grade butane used for this process is purified, pressurized, and delivered at extremely low temperatures, gently separating the oils from the plant.

When the process is complete, any residual butane is purged from the oil to create a safe, pure product that contains concentrated cannabinoids, along with all of the terpenes that deliver the aroma and flavor of the plant — not to mention the full entourage effect.

Another reason this method of extraction is so popular is that it creates opportunities for wax dabs of different consistencies, whereas some other methods are more limited in what they produce.

In addition to BHO, CO2 and propane are other forms of solvent extraction. There are also several forms of solventless extraction (dry-sifting, freeze-drying, ice water bath, a combination of heat and pressure, and so on). Solvent extraction tends to generate the purest, most potent products.

Sugar Wax Dabs

When you see sugar wax, you’ll understand how it got its name. The consistency is very much like mixing a small amount of water into a pile of sugar crystals. It is much like a sugar scrub you might use on your body, where the sugar is wet, but granular, rather than dissolved.

Although it is mostly liquid, it is very thick and sticky. This makes it great for dabbing, as it’s easy to place a small amount on the nail head for heating.

Sugar wax is most commonly made via chemical extraction (BHO), like many other types of cannabis wax.

Budder Dabs

Budder is among the most popular forms of wax because of its smooth, creamy consistency, often compared to butter. It’s not quite as sticky as sugar wax, which makes it a bit easier to work with, particularly where portioning is concerned. However, it will still stay put when you apply it to the nail in your dabbing rig.

Budder is sometimes confused with similarly-named “badder.” While the two are actually very alike, badder is slightly more liquid.

How can you tell the difference? While budder essentially holds its shape, like cake frosting, badder is looser and it will slowly spread.

There are many shades of wax between viscous oil and hard shatter, and budder and badder are just two of the in-between consistencies.

Crumble Dabs

Also made from the BHO method of extraction, crumble is far less wet and sticky than some other types of wax. As you can imagine, it gains its moniker from a drier, more brittle consistency than creamy budder.

Crumble is not entirely dry like a powder, though. It still retains some moisture, making it similar to a crumbly cheese, like feta, cotija, or goat cheese.

In other words, you can easily flake it apart into smaller pieces, but the crumbled bits themselves will more or less hold together.

While budder is often considered to be the happy medium between wet products like oil and drier products like crumble, you may find the dry end of the wax spectrum easier to work with.

It all depends on your personal preferences, which is why it’s a good idea to try different types of wax to discover what works best for you.

Shatter Dabs

This BHO product is hard and brittle, like spun sugar, although it’s most often compared to a sheet of glass. It’s called shatter because you can break it into pieces, either by snapping off a corner or simply smashing it.

Shatter is smooth, solid, stable, and easy to store, which makes it ideal for anyone who plans to make their supply last for a while. Although it’s not quite as easy to dab as budder or stickier products, it does have the distinction of being among the purest forms of concentrate available.

With so many types of wax dabs on the market and so many appealing benefits associated with dabbing, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t consider giving dabs a try. Just make sure to start slow if you’re new to dabbing so that you can ensure a positive and enjoyable experience!

How Do You Smoke Sugar Wax

How Do You Smoke Sugar Wax

Posted by CANNASaver on Tuesday, 17 November 2020 in Canna Blog

With every innovation in cannabis, consumers have to learn the lingo. Sugar wax is yet another term to add to the marijuana dictionary, and having a definition is a much different thing than having experienced it. That’s why we not only cover what makes the wax different from other cannabis concentrates, but also the different - and equally awesome - ways you can smoke sugar wax. So how do you smoke sugar wax?

We'll teach you all there is to know.

What is Sugar Wax?

For every unique texture, refinement process, or technique to extract, there is a name for it. For casual or bargain cannabis consumers that are searching out the THC molecule, these distinctions do not offer much, yet for the engaged connoisseur, it can be the difference that builds brands.

Sugar wax is no exception.

Sugar wax has a lower viscosity than other forms of wax and offers a robust aroma and flavor. The crystalline texture helps preserve the terpenes of the strain or strains the wax is extracted from, as does the agitation process during extraction. We will get into that later.

Sugar Wax Color

Sugar Wax describes a texture and a method of refining extracted THC and other cannabinoids from the cannabis plant.

Sugar wax can range in color - though is often amber to off-white yellow.

Sugar Wax Texture

Have you ever had a really, really old bottle of honey? The viscous honey overtime has the moisture content removed and turns into wet-looking crystalline granules.

In many cases, sugar wax is similar - wet-looking sugar-like crystals.

How is Marijuana Sugar Wax Made?

It’s unsurprising, really. The fact that more varieties of cannabis concentrate continue to hop into the consumer view makes sense. Cannabis concentrates are a great way for consumers to achieve desired effects with less and for producers to maximize the value of every crop.

Sugar wax is heat purged and vacuumed during the refinement process. This allows the product to gain the crystalline structure needed to become good and ‘sugary’. By encouraging nucleation, or the creation of crystal from a solution via heat and oxygen removal, producers are left with a beautiful cannabis concentrate full of the desired effect and with terpenes preserved.

For more information on how cannabis concentrates are made, check out this guide for dummies (not that you’re a dummy by any means).

How is Sugar Wax Different From Other Marijuana Concentrates?

The vacuum and heat purge method used to create sugar wax most closely resembles how shatter, another cannabis concentrate, is made. The main difference is contained within the process of agitation.

Agitation is the part of the extraction process wherein the cannabinoids and terpenes are stripped from the plant to create a concentrated version.

Sugar wax uses substantial agitation throughout the extraction process, in combination with dialed-down temperature and lowered condensation when compared with other concentrates (thus the vacuum purge). This allows THC or CBD crystallization to happen more readily while keeping the terpene profile intact.

The Two Best Ways to Smoke Cannabis Sugar Wax

Sugar wax is like all other cannabis concentrates in that they can be smoked, vaporized, or included in edibles.
The difference in textures and consistency make some concentrates better than others for certain types of consumption methods. To truly grasp an appreciation of marijuana sugar wax, where flavor and aroma are maximized, the following two methods have been tested (personally) to great success.

Dab Your Sugar

Dabbing is the standard when it comes to most concentrates. Smoking or, more accurately, vaporizing cannabis sugar wax via dabbing is one of the best ways to ensure the flavors and effects are fully appreciable.

Why do you ask?

Dabbing can be done using various types of apparatus and with numerous accessories. For instance, this writer chooses a rig - the most common consumption tool for dabbing - with an e-nail. E-nails allow dabbers to choose and maintain a temperature they dab at, while the rig itself allows the act of dabbing to occur.

These work in tandem for a single reason: the melting points of terpenes and cannabinoids present in the wax you are smoking. Yes, the “chemistry in high school” melting points.

The melting point determines the dab flavor and can affect the effects (yes - I wrote that bit to make you reread it.)

Given the robust presence of terpenes found in sugar wax, dabbing it with an accessory like an e-nail makes for a consistent dabbing experience. Be careful though, the experience may be too glowing for your high eyeballs to want to look at.

ALWAYS take it slow with cannabis concentrates.

PRO TIP: Keep your e-nail somewhere between 500 and 750 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal use. Keep this scale in mind:

  • Lower temp: better flavor, higher potential for waste

  • Higher temp = bigger dabs, still excellent flavor, less potential for waste

Infuse Your Flower

It could be an experienced take, but I can’t see a reason to not pump up the volume on any flower I’m consuming. That means adding wax and other cannabis concentrates to the fresh flower.

PRO TIP: Get concentrates and strains that align or complement.

It’s not that this is a new idea. We just find it reliably produces a better flavor than even smoking weed through fruit. People have always added hash or kief or both (aka Moonrocks) to products - though it has become a lot more commercially available as of late.

There is a question that arises, however. And particularly in an environment where a buyer can get a 1/8th of weed and a gram of sugar wax (or other concentrates) for $30 or so dollars (in Colorado [Nov. 2020] low end and $100+ on the higher end.)

Some more experienced consumers may find the stellar in-house or branded infused joints and moonrocks to be just fine, but personally, I like to turn the dial myself.

That is where infusing your own joint comes into play - and why it is such an awesome way to appreciate the robust and somewhat granular aspects of sugar wax within some of your favorite flower.

Other Ways to Use Sugar Wax

Sugar wax can additionally be added to edibles, though it has to go through the process of decarboxylation first. You can click on that link of the term for more info. Once activated via decarboxylation, it can basically be added to anything.

Did we just change how you use sugar wax? Let us know.

Sugar THC

Sugar THC

Posted by CANNASaver on Friday, 29 July 2022 in Canna Blog

Wax, flower, vapes, and topicals, oh my! There are so many ways to consume THC, and even within each category there are so many subcategories. One of those subcategories is sugar wax. Here, we'll explain what that is and why it's a popular choice when going to your nearest dispensary.

sugar wax THC

What is Sugar Wax?

Sugar Wax, or Sugar THC is a form of cannabis concentrate. The name comes from its consistency; like wet sugar, it's usually fully dissolved. Sugar wax is one of the purest marijuana products with a very high THC level ranging between 60 and 90%.

With the high THC content, sugar wax is often used for overcoming high tolerances and provides the high cannabis consumers want.

What is Dabbing?

Dabbing or vaporizing is the most popular mode of smoking sugar wax. You can use a coil pen or e-nail, where you drop your concentrate into. You can also use a heated dab rig to drop your concentrated sugar wax THC for the most powerful and potent effect.

Now, as dabbing is getting extremely popular, the manufacturers are continuing to develop different types of dabs, and the many varieties of concentrates include the following:

  • Shatter
  • Rosin
  • Live Resin
  • Ice Wax
  • Ear wax
  • Butter

Generally, a dab is just a dab and this means a concentrated marijuana extract. The many different types of concentrates or dabs are actually extremely similar and the differences are superficial for the most part.

Different classifications of the concentrates are based on how the concentrate has been extracted and the consistency and texture of the end product.

Sugar wax on the other hand is a more solid way of extracting THC into concentrates. Just like shatter, sugar wax is a refined concentrate that can be used through vacuuming or heat purging. This gives it a more solid or ‘sugary’ texture.

The process also allows the THC to crystalize while keeping the terpene intact. THC extraction into sugar wax concentrate is similar to how sugar is extracted from sugarcane, which is what gives it its resemblance and name.

sugar dab

How is Sugar Wax Made?

Truthfully speaking, sugar wax has the ability to develop naturally with time, as the lipids within the wax start breaking down and separating from the cannabinoids. This causes the wax to start crystallizing.

Sugar wax can also result from condensation or other contaminants that get mixed with the wax. The wax can also get overly agitated during its production.

Most dabers prefer the texture and flavor of sugar wax that’s made and produced by manufacturers. What you are seeing in stores as sugar wax is actually the accidental variety that results from a mistake during manufacture or an aged product.

The quality of the sugar wax you buy depends on the potency of the marijuana from which it was made, and not entirely on how it was made, even though a fresh wax is the best and most preferred option.

How is Sugar Wax Different From Other Concentrates?

Sugar wax is a concentrate of Marijuana and it has the full flavor to go with it. It is however slightly grainy in texture and it replicates the feel and look of sugar. It is also cube-like in shape and made of tiny glistening crystals.

Sugar wax is a  little less messy than other concentrates, in that it is a little thick and not sticky.

Most people do prefer sugar wax due to its rich and complex flavor. Others say that the dabs made of sugar wax are the best and easy to work with compared to other concentrates when it comes to a dab tool.

You also do not need too much sugar wax THC to dab with, which means you can save a lot of concentrate when dabbing with sugar wax.

How Is Sugar Wax Smoked?

Sugar wax concentrate is either smoked through vaporizing or dabbing. You can also use it as a topper for a bong or flower bowl.

Dab Syringe

Dab Syringe

Posted by CANNASaver on Thursday, 28 July 2022 in Canna Blog

People who consume THC understand that the right and accurate dosage is vital for predictability and consistency. However, sometimes you can build up a tolerance, so you're looking for something a littlle stronger to get you to where you need to be.

Enter: the dab syringe.

We all know that wax concentrates are stronger and more efficient, but the syringe is a different level.

What is Dabbing?

Dabbing is a consumption method that involves the use of a dab rig to smoke or inhale cannabis extracts.

The nail is usually heated, and then a tiny amount of the concentrate is applied to the surface. The heat vaporizes it, and the smoke travels down the stem onto the base and up through the mouthpiece and into your lungs. The results usually are highly potent, effective and very fast.

Dabbing Concentrates

Dabbing involves concentrates, including potent cannabis products that contain between 50 and 90% THC. Sometimes it gets as high as 99% THC. Most manufacturers will make them using various methods, including supercritical CO2 and Hydrocarbon gasses.

These different methods usually result in different consistencies that can either be too runny or too brittle. In most cases, people will use a dab tool to apply a small concentrated amount, while others will use a dab syringe.

What is A Dab Syringe?

A dab syringe is a device used to measure the exact and precise dosing each time. It is also known as an applicator and looks like a syringe which you can use to give liquid medication. It is essentially a tool that delivers measured dab or concentrate.

Most dab syringes come pre-filled, which means you can dispense the amount you would wish to use.

What you do is push the "plunger" in order to apply the amount you want right on the nail of the dab rig – or right into your mouth, since it's already activated THC!!

A dab syringe, or distillate syringe, is a concentrate where all of the plant compounds except THC or CBD are removed. It is found in its pure form before terpenes are added. The distillate lacks aroma and flavor.

Distillate is the main and primary ingredient in edibles, vape cartridges, topicals, tinctures, and many other cannabis products that are commercially produced. Patients looking for a more versatile product with multiple users will find distillate to be a more cost-effective and undervalued option.

Distillate is usually sold in a syringe and dosed through a plunger. It is preactivated, which means that it is decarboxylated and has a psychoactive effect when taken orally. It can, however, still be inhaled or taken topically.

What Does a Dab Syringe Look Like?

Distillate looks like a viscous liquid. It is thick and translucent and amber in color. This color tone can, however, change depending on the process of extraction used and any added ingredients.

A good example would be the addition of terpenes that are usually destroyed during the distillation process and need to be added back after the fact. Most companies can get terpenes from cannabis and many other plants.

When the distillate is made of cannabis-driven terpenes, it tends to have a dark amber color, although it is not as dark as RSO oil. The distillate that has been made with food-grade terpenes has a yellow or light amber tone.

How Do You Use Distillate?

Distillate is exceptionally versatile, which makes it a popular choice for most medical patients. There are numerous ways of administering it, and finding the best one for you can be the best way of achieving the relief you seek from a specific symptom. However, the main modes of use include:

Edible Oral Dosing

Oral dosing helps alleviate symptoms of pain, mood swings and insomnia. Most packaging for distillate recommends the intake of a small rice-shaped drop of distillate, which can range between 25 and 50mg, which is higher than the standard recommended dosage of between 5 and 10 mg for oral THC.

It is, however, very easy to take more than recommended, resulting in intense psychoactive effects. Be sure to find out the correct dosage at all times.

Now, although distillate is pre-activated, there are some specific people, e.g., those suffering from digestive issues, who may find it less beneficial to dose orally. For these patients, it is better to consume the doses after consuming a snack or a fatty meal.

Dab Syringe Applications

Distillate can be used topically, although most people usually prefer mixing it with other lotions and oils to make it work better. This method can work great for people suffering from localized pain.

Using the distillate topically is excellent as it will not create any psychoactive effects that are markedly different from dosing through any other methods.

When you create your own topicals, you can control the potency of the mixture, which allows for stronger products than what is sold by most dispensaries. Making your own also saves you money compared to store-bought topicals.

Smoking Distillate

Yes, you can smoke distillate. This is the primary ingredient for vape oil that’s usually blended with terpenes to mimic the strain effects. Now, just like the DIY topicals and edibles discussed above, you can also fill up your own vape cartridges using a distillate.

The benefit of inhaling is that it offers a quick onset and has the fastest delivery method for a patient. You can utilize this process when dosing, as the distillate is high in concentration. The inhaled effects feel more intense when consumed than a similar amount of vapor from smoking using flowers.

What Are the Drawbacks of Using Distillate?

Well, as with everything, there are some drawbacks to the dab syringe. First of all, it is a highly refined product of cannabis that’s as far from the whole plant as possible. This plant is processed down to its primary compound.

Second, the effects are psychoactive, they can feel intense due to the high concentration of THC, and most patients will notice that the overall experience of the distillate feels quite different.

However, despite these drawbacks, distillate is still an extremely affordable and effective option for most people, especially when it's used in conjunction with other whole-plant medicines.

Should I Try Marijuana Concentrates?

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 31 October 2016 in Canna Blog

Is It Time for Concentrates?

Concentrates are a far more prevalent product in the current marijuana industry than they ever have been, but for new customers and tourists the idea can be a little daunting and much of the time not something that they are actually looking for. I have seen tourists drop hundreds of dollars on concentrates and the necessary apparatuses to consume them, just for a few days worth of their trip, when really they could have gotten more than enough regular marijuana to meet whatever chemical demands their body may have had.

While concentrates are understandably a more purified form of what we are all smoking anyway, they can bring with them some disconcerting effects. There is of course the stigma that if you’ve not done concentrates before, your first time dabbing can be a little ridiculous compared to smoking regular flower. The first time I dabbed was right when I first moved to Denver, and I was blisteringly high for almost three hours. But the first thing I noticed was after having dabbed, regular flower did not hit me the same way for a few days. Concentrates can wreak havoc on your tolerance, and if you get too used to doing concentrates you can find yourself not even getting anywhere smoking regular weed. This is one of the main reasons I don’t do concentrates, because I enjoy actual smoking too much to let it get ruined by that level of tolerance. Even things like disposable vape pens can do a number on your resistance to THC, though generally only the higher end pure hash cartridges, as some of the ones cut with polyethylene glycol come in only slightly above smoking normally.

But for some people, particularly those who genuinely use it for medical benefits and need an incredibly strong high as fast as they can get it, and after building up a tolerance to regular marijuana it can be the next step for people not interested in edibles or tinctures. It can be pretty depressing for medical patients to find that their tolerance has risen to the point that an intake method doesn’t work anymore, and having this next step option is a nice trade off, though it can get considerably more expensive if you do it very regularly. That being said, because of the new regulation on concentrates only allowed to be sold as attributing to 3.5 grams of your allowed buying quantity, many dispensaries are running sales on concentrates, since they used to be able to sell considerably more at a time under previous regulations.

Some new products have cropped up as well, making ultra purified concentrates that then have additional terpenes added back in for an even more enhanced effect. These are very clean compared to regular flower as with smoking weed or tobacco there is a good amount of plant matter you are dealing with in the process of trying to get your chemicals. Terpenes can sometimes get lost or lessened in the case of some concentrate production, which can take away from the complexity of the high, but these days extractors have gotten much more skilled than when this all was starting. For people with greater levels of health concerns as far as what they put into their body can find concentrates to be the thing they might be looking for, though intake methods can have a decent presence in this decision as well.

This also comes into play when selling to people in a dispensary, as sometimes the people that want concentrates are only going to be in town for a few days and aren’t going to want to spend a whole bunch on a reliable setup, making for a growth in the available vaporizer pens, varying in price and reliability from 13$ disposable pens to several hundred dollar gold plated options. I have used a few of the disposables and had a roughly $60 pen that worked fairly well, but it is definitely a learning process as far as how much each pen can functionally use and timing for good hits.

Ultimately concentrates are for those with an already established tolerance, or an option every once in a while to have slightly too good of a time. They are definitely a big choice to make if you plan on switching to them regularly, though the industry is constantly working to make them more accessible so who knows maybe that’ll be the only way we smoke in a year or two. Just be wary, they can often be more than anyone regularly needs.

When you unbox the Source Turbo from Extract Craft, it's hard not to feel intimidated by how complicated it looks to make your own concentrates. For me, in all honesty, I gave up the blonde hair. I dyed mine blue-black just to make sure I could easily operate this unit. The blonde needed to go away so that a mad scientist could take her place.

In reality such a drastic makeover wasn't necessary to operate this baby. It's actually a very simple process, the machine itself. What you need most is patience and the ability to follow instructions (for all the steps!) before and after using the Source.

At the time of this writing, I have only made shatter and pull n' snap. I have not tried Jar Tech yet to make EHO (Ethanol Hash Oil) or edibles. This is the part that still intimidates me just a hair.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Reclaims ethanol
  • Makes smokables and edibles
  • Price

Cons:

  • Process requires patience
  • Ethanol required isn't legal in all states (check your local laws)
  • Ethanol is expensive
  • Loud

In A Nutshell:

Patience is something this Squirrel lacks almost completely. At the age of 10 I unwrapped all my Christmas presents and rewrapped them. Nobody was the wiser until I confessed many years after. Now nobody wraps my presents. The best I can hope for in the way of wrapping is the shipping box.

While waiting for your Source Turbo to arrive you have to watch and read all the documentation, maybe several times. Take lots of notes and make a "Flight check list" for all the steps you will need to take in prep, extraction and post processing of oil.

Here are a few helpful links:

All the steps might seem intimidating and they are, until you do it the first time. Then you are wondering why this all seemed so complicated in the beginning. In my case it's probably because I barely passed Chemistry in high school, probably due to the fact I was smoking weed. So it's a bit ironic that weed is to blame in rekindling my interest in the subject I failed to excel in so many moons ago.

After my 3rd batch of making the THC oil with my Source I don't need my check list anymore. Everything is pretty simple. The only tricky part that I am still trying to master is when to actually end my process. Getting that sweet spot for the oil takes time and experience to get it right.

If you have the right friends perhaps you can get trim or shake to experiment with until you get the hang of making your shatter. The only downfall with using trim verses bud is that it tends to hold onto more of the ethanol during the wash portion. At least that was my experience. For my second attempt at washing trim I was able to get more ethanol out by letting the mason jar sit longer upside down in the measuring cup, for almost an additional 1 1/4 cups.

For this review I am going to focus more on the machine use verses the whole process. A detailed account of the steps, from prewash to finish with journal of my first few sessions visit my personal reviews site, Racky's Reviews

Extract Craft was out of their buchner filter and flask so I had to order on Amazon. Personally, this is a must have as it really speeds up the process with the Source's vacuum assist and gets your wash clean. Some people use mason jars with coffee filters to do their filtering with patience and success too.

The hose that came with my Amazon flask was horrible. I needed to be a descendant of Kâli to use the vacuum assist on the Source with this rigid short tubing. I couldn't find anything local that worked either. So the first two washes I relied on gravity to filter my "tincture".

After much frustration at gravity intentionally deciding to move much slower under my watchful impatient gaze, I started plotting ideas to make my own vacuum hose. For once being on oxygen had it's perks. With my "no crush" green tubing, a swivel O2 male connector and racers tape *aka duct tape* I made an ugly but amazingly efficient vacuum hose. What took hours with gravity now only took a fraction of the time. The vacuum assist on the Source is easy to use and works great.

Now I was ready to use the Source. First set altitude, which is super easy. Hold the green button for 10 full seconds. Click out your elevation at 1 click per 1000FT. If at 300FT round up to 1k. Yes, their rounding rules are weird.

The written instructions are slightly different from the video. I think someone may have been smoking some weed when they wrote them out. Per video you hold for 4 full seconds to start turbo mode. Unit will give 2 slow flashes. To stop press button once. Unit will give you 3 *not 2* quick flashes.

Use a timer because the Source does not fully shut off at the end of the 120 min cycle. The fan still runs so you might not realize your session ended. On turbo mode, wash filled to Fill Line, it took about 2 hrs and 45 min to get my oil to the consistency I wanted. The last 30 minutes watch carefully, checking every 5-10 minutes.

Their app is another great way to monitor your time too. This app has to be the most fool proof software I have ever used. It automatically connected to my Source without me having to push anything on the unit.

This wonderful little machine is loud. I think I would hesitate to use this in an apartment. Especially if female. When the pump kicks on, it's pretty loud and who knows what dirty images that might conjure in your neighbors heads. They might get the wrong idea on why you are so happy all the time! Oh my!

However, if you like distillate and other concentrates you NEED this unit. What better way to get the flower and flavors in the concentrates you love than make your own? Plus you know what all is in your concentrates. You can even add additional terps with companies like TrueTerpenes line of products. Custom blended and super yummy.

The unit really is "So Easy A Squirrel Can Do It." It consists of one button and one screw "knob," not much you can screw up there. The prep and post process are a little more complicated but if you visit the links above and familiarize yourself with all the steps, it really isn't that hard. Make sure to make use of their FaceBook Group too. There is a huge wealth of knowledge there with very friendly and helpful users.

If you grow your own flower and have the money I would highly suggest getting the ETOH Pro, although there is something very therapeutic about doing the smaller batches in the Source. It helps to get my fluffy biscuit up and moving about.

This unit due to it's simple, quality design and ease of use earns it a Wacky Racky Seal of Approval.
