How hard is it to make a batch of stoner spread? Not very – in fact, we’ll give you the recipe. Not sure of the supplies needed? We’ll make sure you know what to get.

We will cover decarbing your weed. A necessary step to activate the leaf so that eating it gets you buzzed.

Significantly, we’re going to focus on using a slow cooker to make cannabutter. It’s one of the best ways to cook yourself up some bud butter. Though, you can also use a coffee maker.

Decarbing Cannabis

As noted, if you munch some raw cannabis, it won’t do much for you. That’s because it must be decarbed. That means being heated for a period of time. 

THC and CBD in fresh plants are actually THCA and CBDA. They cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier to activate your cannabinoid receptors. Those receptors are how your body utilizes cannabinoids.

Cellular receptors are key to the endocannabinoid system. The ECS regulates important body functions like pain, immunity, appetite, sleep, and mood. Body cells have CB1 and CB2 ports that cannabinoids either hook onto or block.

Decarboxylation changes the chemical structure of cannabinoids. Then they can be absorbed by your body.

To decarb, raw plant matter is spread out on a cookie sheet. Then your oven is heated to 200-245°F. Buds are then baked at 220°F for about 25-40 minutes, depending on temperature. It is now ready for consumption.

Many cannabutter recipes recommend using a conventional convection oven to heat ganja first. But you can also decarb in a crockpot prior to adding the butter.

You would place the weed you want to use in a Mason jar. Then add water to the ceramic pot until it’s half full. Place the jar inside and cover. Set the device on high and let simmer for 4 hours.

Okay, once your flower is ready, what else do you need?

Ingredients Needed for Slow Cooker Cannabutter 

It's time to gather supplies.

1) For ingredients, you will want:

• An ounce of cannabis – decarbed. Think about the effects you want. If you want a bedtime snack, then select an indica. If you want something to boost you through the day, then choose a sativa. Or for balanced benefits, a hybrid strain may be best.

• A pound of salted or unsalted butter – your choice. Some people restrict sodium for lowering blood pressure. It will work with either kind of butter.

• And you will want a cup of water. Your options are bottled distilled water or plain tap water. Again, your option. Either will do.

2) Now, what about equipment?

• Obviously, you’re gonna need a crock pot or multifunction cooker.

• And you’ll need a trusty herb grinder to mulch up your marijuana. You want your cannabis chopped. That way water can surround the pieces and percolate off those all-important cannabinoids.

• Find yourself one of those metal kitchen strainers or a colander bowl.

• In the bowl, you want some cheesecloth or cloth fabric. This will further filter out particulates when pouring weedy water into the strainer. Coffee filters or pantyhose also work well for this.

• Lastly, you’ll want a plastic tub or glass jar to store your magic margarine in.

So, once you have everything you need, what’s the process that results in pot spread?

How To Make Cannabutter In a Slow Cooker

If you’ve ever cooked anything by following a recipe, you know that it’s a step-by-step procedure. We’ll walk you through the routine.

1. It starts with grinding up that ganja into fine particles.
2. Next is the decarbing that we talked about previously. Whether you use an oven or a slow cooker, this is a key point of the process.
3. Once your weed is ready, it goes into your crockpot with the cup of water. Also, add the pound of butter.
4. Dial your slow cooker to low heat and place the cover. This is where patience is important. You’re going to let it cook for between 12 and 24 hours.
5. Why up to a full day of heatings? To get out all the good stuff. The longer you cook it, the stronger the final product will be. Make sense? You don’t necessarily need to stir the marinating marijuana mix, but you can if you want.
6. Hold your strainer over whatever container you have chosen. The colander should be lined with the cheesecloth or fabric. You will then pour the liquid from the crockpot through it, trapping the plant matter. Make sure to press all of the liquid from your fabric. When you’re sure you’ve got it all, ball up the cheesecloth with the squeezed-out plant material. Pitch everything but the butter itself.
7. Allow the butter to cool and then refrigerate.

Now, you can use the cannabutter in any recipe that you’d use regular butter in. Or just eat it plain. It’s your life, you be you.

What is Dabbing?

Dabbing is a consumption method that involves the use of a dab rig to smoke or inhale cannabis extracts. 

The nail is usually heated, and then a tiny amount of the concentrate is applied to the surface. The heat vaporizes it, and the smoke travels down the stem onto the base and up through the mouthpiece and into your lungs. The results usually are highly potent, effective and very fast.

Dabbing Concentrates

Dabbing involves concentrates, including potent cannabis products that contain between 50 and 90% THC. Sometimes it gets as high as 99% THC. Most manufacturers will make them using various methods, including supercritical CO2 and Hydrocarbon gasses.

These different methods usually result in different consistencies that can either be too runny or too brittle. In most cases, people will use a dab tool to apply a small concentrated amount, while others will use a dab syringe.

What is A Dab Syringe?

A dab syringe is a device used to measure the exact and precise dosing each time. It is also known as an applicator and looks like a syringe which you can use to give liquid medication. It is essentially a tool that delivers measured dab or concentrate.

Most dab syringes come pre-filled, which means you can dispense the amount you would wish to use.

What you do is push the "plunger" in order to apply the amount you want right on the nail of the dab rig – or right into your mouth, since it's already activated THC!!

A dab syringe, or distillate syringe, is a concentrate where all of the plant compounds except THC or CBD are removed. It is found in its pure form before terpenes are added. The distillate lacks aroma and flavor.

Distillate is usually sold in a syringe and dosed through a plunger. It is preactivated, which means that it is decarboxylated and has a psychoactive effect when taken orally. It can, however, still be inhaled or taken topically.

What Does a Dab Syringe Look Like?

Distillate looks like a viscous liquid. It is thick and translucent and amber in color. This color tone can, however, change depending on the process of extraction used and any added ingredients. 

A good example would be the addition of terpenes that are usually destroyed during the distillation process and need to be added back after the fact. Most companies can get terpenes from cannabis and many other plants.

When the distillate is made of cannabis-driven terpenes, it tends to have a dark amber color, although it is not as dark as RSO oil. The distillate that has been made with food-grade terpenes has a yellow or light amber tone.

Lately, there’s been a lot of cannabis culture focus on concentrates. After all, they offer a lot of bang per bong hit. Or a few pulls on your vape pen will get you there - or maybe a drop or two of isolate.

But your personal finances may have you thinking hard about how much wax you can afford. You may worry that your vape cart collection is running dry. Cheap concentrates can help keep you dabbing, even when money is tight. 

At first glance, concentrated weed may seem costly. Compared to flower or edibles, it may look like you’re paying a lot for a little bit of crumble or shatter. But are you comparing apples to apples?

What Different Kinds of Concentrates are There?

The wide variety of waxy weed can be confusing. Generally, they look different from each other. But which is which, and why are they called what they are?

Here is a quick primer on these powerful cannabis solids and liquids.

Shatter is a flat, brittle substance. It tends to be golden yellow in color. It’s easy to dab with because it easily breaks into small, manageable pieces. This makes it popular.

Budder is an amber, soft whipped wax. Because it’s like the spreadable dairy product used in dining, it’s sometimes called butter. It, too, is easy to use, which dabbers like.

Then we have crumble. It is crumbly, hence the name.  The reddish-brown solid has a soft, particulate consistency that makes it very manageable. 

There are pressed waxes like hash or rosin. They vary somewhat in shading from light to dark. Hash is brittle, much like shatter, whereas rosin can be wet and sticky. The latter is gooier to work with but sticks to dab nails nicely.

Resin is a brownish sap. Like rosin, it adheres nicely. 

Resin and rosin both have ‘live’ varieties made from uncured cannabis. Thus, they have more terpenes than dried and cured cannabis products. This increases their potency. 

Vape carts are filled with liquid the color of maple syrup. It only takes a few pulls from a vaporizer to get most people feeling groovy.

Tinctures and isolates tend to be clear. A drop or two under your tongue gives you some sublime stoning.

So, now that you know what’s what, which ones hit the hardest?

How Strong Are Various Concentrates?

When it comes to pure power, is there a variety that looms larger than others?

If you just measure THC alone, all the waxes we listed run up over 90% THC. Same thing with vapes and oil drops. So, they are all pretty stout. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they are all the same. 

Again, terpenes can boost the effects of these solids, so that is a consideration. And, as we noted, there are weed waxes that have more of these supercharging substances.

Live rosin and live resin, using fresher flower, tend to preserve more terpenes. Thus, some consider them stronger and better for dabbing. But they are a bit more complicated to produce and that adds increased cost to the consumer.

Trying some live wax for yourself could help you decide if they are worth the extra money. Drag off a friend’s vape if you want to see if buying one is for you.

Otherwise, 90% THC is pretty powerful. So, any of the other forms will still get you plenty high.

What’s the Least Expensive Concentrated Cannabis?

How can you get your hands on some cheaper concentrates? Well, you could buy some buds and make your own. Sometimes, though, there are costs for specialized equipment. And it is a lot of work.

This makes them more stimulating and better suited for daytime use; however, it can make them less helpful with treating symptoms such as nausea which often appear at night or during times when you want to lay down and rest.
2. Indica strains also tend to be more sedating than sativas because they contain higher levels of another cannabinoid called myrcene—a terpene found in many plants, including hops, that can help promote sleepiness while reducing anxiety and inflammation.

Okay, scenario time, folks:

You’ve decided after smoking a particularly strong sativa that you are going to clean and organize your room. As you dig through various piles of stored away nostalgia, you come across many different marijuana vape cartridges you didn’t fully finish. Some of them are even about full. You feel like a pirate. You have, like Jack Sparrow, found lost treasure.

As you look at your current cartridge, you only have maybe one or two hits left before you’ll need to go to the dispensary. As beautiful as that sounds, the cleaning was about all you were wanting to do before chowing down on some snacks and maybe taking a nap.

You vote to might as well finish off the cartridges you have with the newly-rediscovered cannabis. After all, some of them are almost full! Nothing beats the glorious taste of a puff on some golden nectar found within vape cartridges. Absolute treasures.

But then you begin thinking, "I don’t remember the last time I bought that brand. How old are these cartridges? Can marijuana go bad? Do vape cartridges expire?"

As they say, “Nothing good lasts forever” and unfortunately, marijuana vape cartridges are no exception.

The Vape Cartridge

To give you a simple definition of a vape cartridge itself; it’s the device (plastic or glass tank with a mouthpiece) that carries cannabis oils and their properties (the fun part) into your body.

You should be aware that any little piece of this marijuana contraption, from the cannabis concentrate to the battery, is very much at risk of wearing out, failing, or “being bad”. Vape cartridges should not be looked at as a device built for longevity like pipes or bongs. Though this doesn’t mean you have to throw a cartridge away after a few uses.

Vape cartridges contain THC concentrate rather than actual marijuana buds/plant material. This means the vape cartridge will keep terpenes from evaporating and will not lose potency because of drying like with buds.

How Long Are Vape Cartridges Supposed To Last?

The best answer I can give you is that it depends on a few different factors: the size of the cartridge (half or full gram of oil), how often you are puffing on it, how well the cartridge stays together, etc.

How many puffs does a cartridge last? 

A full gram vape cartridge is supposed to last around 300 seconds of total inhale time.

So, if you are on the lighter side of smoking, for example, you take 3-second puffs. This would grant you about 100 puffs from the cartridge. 

If you proceed to use the cartridge but only once per day, the potential for you holding onto a cartridge for a much longer amount of time is very possible.

As opposed to those who use marijuana products more often, let’s say these individuals hit the device for 6 seconds, five times a day. Suddenly, that gram cartridge only lasts roughly ten days.

So, Can Vape Cartridges Expire?

If you haven’t guessed it by now, the simple and short answer is yes. 

Much like many prescription medications/foods/drinks, vape cartridges (and wax concentrates) do expire. 

However, unlike the meds/foods/drinks, vape cartridges don’t necessarily have an expiration tag or sell-by date, per se. 

Expired vape cartridges will give indications of age and overall product degradation.

When cannabis oils found in the cartridge degrade, the potency of the oil lessens. The longer you take to finish a cartridge; the weaker the effects become when using an old vape cartridge. No “high” feeling being produced when you are wanting to get high is a bit of a bummer to say the least.

Signs that your vape pen may have expired are:

• The oil has changed color and has become sludgy in appearance. Either a dark brown or black. No longer a beautiful golden color.
• The oil has a funky taste and is incredibly harsh. A baking-soda-left-in-the-back-of-your-fridge kind of taste.
• The oil has no smell and, with a lack of smell, likely comes a lack of potency.

What Happens if I Smoke an Expired Vape Cartridge?

The only real consequence of smoking an expired cartridge is a lack of taste, smell, and potency of the THC. 

But, depending on how your cartridge was stored, the most disgusting thing that can happen to your vape cartridge is potentially growing mold. 

Moldy weed doesn’t exactly taste great and furthermore, inhaling mold can lead to various lung-related diseases.

The silver lining is that vape cartridges do not go bad very quickly. 

Most vape cartridges have a shelf life of about 1-2 years.  

If the cartridge’s oil is still close to the same color and there are no signs of the oil becoming a sludgy substance, you are good to go. Proper storage of the cartridge will ensure it stays better for longer.

How To Prolong the Life of Your Vape Cartridge

Here are some tips to keep those vape cartridges fresh:

Avoid Sunlight

The absolute, most important way to store a vape cartridge is to keep the device completely away from direct sunlight. Sunlight destroys cannabinoids at a chemical level.The color changes from gold to brown, leading to reduced potencies and changes the way terpenes taste or smell (not in a good way).

Keep The Temp Down, But Not Too Low

The ideal temperature for storing cannabis vape cartridges is around 70F. 

If vape cartridges are left in higher temperatures, much like with flower, it loses what makes them shine to begin with. 

You can store your carts either in a drawer or you can store them in the fridge, but do not freeze your carts. It causes a laundry list of problems to the cartridge.

An Upright Cartridge is the Happiest

One thing that many miss while attempting to expand the life of their vape cartridges is to keep the mouthpiece part facing up, vertically, when not in use. This keeps your cartridge from leaking and creating clogs in the mouthpiece.

With more and more states legalizing cannabis in all of its wonderful forms each election cycle, the industry and products themselves are evolving. One of the most exciting categories of cannabis products available now is extracts. Extracts have been around for decades, but only with the legal market have they really become the subject of intense enthusiasm.  

Those new to extracts frequently wonder what the differences are between solvent extracts and solventless extracts, as well as if there are any health concerns to consider. We’re going to take a deeper look at what defines solvent vs. solventless extracts, what makes each type unique, and if one is ultimately better than the other.

What Is The Difference In Solvent vs. Solventless Extraction?

When it comes to solvent vs. solventless extracts, the primary difference is how the extracts are made and whether that process involves any solvent. Solvent extracts require some intermediary to extract the trichomes and terpenes from the cannabis plant matter. Solventless extracts are those made without the use of any solvent or solution and require some sort of manual processing to extract the essential cannabis goodness. 

Popular Solvent Extracts

Bubble Hash

Some of the very first cannabis extracts of the modern era were made with the “universal solvent,” water, or to be more specific, ice. Also known as ice water hash, bubble hash is made by agitating frozen plant matter with ice and water, allowing the ice to break the frozen trichomes off, which are then sent through a series of screens to achieve different hash grades. The finer the mesh of the screen, the better the result. 

CO2 Oil

Many enthusiasts consider CO2 oil as clean as bubble hash. It uses supercritical CO2 to extract the trichs and terps from the plant material, so there is no petrochemical element, as well as BHO and PHO. Once the CO2 has extracted all the needed compounds, it is purged from the extract to leave a golden oil. One downside is that sometimes the terpene profile is suboptimal. 

BHO & PHO

Butane hash oil or BHO, and Propane hash oil or PHO, are highly popular and efficient ways to extract cannabis. BHO is far more popular, however. They involve using butane or propane to free the trichomes from the plant material, then subjecting the solution to a vacuum purge to remove all of the solvent. Depending on the processing specifics, BHO and PHO can result in whipped, fluffy budder, crisp & crunchy shatter, or even live resin, making it incredibly versatile. 

Full Spectrum Terp Sauce

Terp sauce is also known as “high terpene full spectrum extract,” and it is precisely that. It’s terpene-rich and provides the full concierge effect of a broad cannabinoid profile. It’s generally made using butane or propane, but it’s processed at far lower temperatures in the vacuum purge, at a much slower pace. This results in a thick sauce with “sugar” in it, which is actually crystallized cannabinoids.

Alcohol Wash Extracts

Since cannabinoids are alcohol-soluble, another popular extraction method involves using various alcohols, such as isopropyl or ethanol. Since alcohol is also a powerful solvent, this process must be done quickly to avoid leaching undesirable components like chlorophyll into the final extract. Quick-wash alcohol extracts have a very waxy texture and a much darker color than many other methods.

Popular Solventless Extracts

Rosin

Rosin is one of the most recent advancements for extraction, and it has become so popular that you can now order home rosin presses online to make your own from surplus flower. It involves a pair of heated plates that press flower with thousands of pounds of pressure and a few hundred degrees of heat to liquefy and squeeze out the cannabinoids and terpenes in a sticky, oily extract that is one of the most delicious cannabis products available. Rosin can be made from THC and CBD flower to suit the consumer’s preference.

Hash

Hash is fairly rare to find in dispensaries. It is the raw trichomes and oils from physically handling cannabis flower, which is then collected and pressed into a block or ball, often with the help of heat. Sometimes harvested flower is agitated on a screen, similar to your flower grinder but much larger, to collect the kief for processing.

Are There Health & Safety Concerns With Solvent vs. Solventless Extracts?

In every legal cannabis market in the country, there are stringent testing requirements in place to ensure public safety. We’re not talking about taste testing; we’re talking about full-scale laboratory-based gas chromatography-mass spectrometry testing. Testing confirms with molecular precision whether or not there are any contaminants in the extracts that are sold in dispensaries. 

The process is simple; each production facility in each state is governed by that state’s requirements for periodic batch testing. If anything tests above pre-defined safety limits or contains any harmful volatile organic compounds leftover from extraction, the products cannot be sold. The manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure their products are aligned with state regulations and safe to consume, and in many cases, you can even get the most recent test results via their websites, so you can dab with confidence.

Solvent vs. Solventless Extracts: Which Ones Are Better?

Like most pleasures in the cannabis space, which one is better will often come down to simple personal preference.
